Watershed Bristol: Timber T&G Doors & Screens Refurbishment (Primer, Undercoat & Gloss)

Project Overview

SH Decorating Services was appointed to refurbish and redecorate a series of large timber tongue-and-groove (T&G) doors and associated timber screens at the Watershed in Bristol. The scope required repair, preparation and a durable primer/undercoat/gloss specification suitable for a high-traffic, public-facing environment.

Key Facts

  • Client/Site: Watershed, Bristol
  • Scope: Repair, preparation, primer, undercoat and gloss finish
  • Substrates: Timber T&G doors and timber screens
  • Finish: Hardwearing gloss system for long-term durability
  • Outcome: Restored appearance, improved protection and consistent sheen

Client Objectives

  • Restore the appearance of weathered timber doors and screens
  • Repair localised defects to achieve a uniform finish
  • Apply a robust coating system (primer, undercoat, gloss) for durability
  • Maintain safe access and minimise disruption during the works

Works Completed

1) Repairs & Preparation

  • Condition survey to identify failing coatings and timber defects
  • Protection applied to surrounding areas, ironmongery and interfaces
  • Removal of loose/flaking coatings; edges feathered back to sound paint
  • Repairs completed to splits, dents and damaged sections using suitable timber repair compounds
  • Sanding and profiling to achieve a consistent key and smooth finish
  • Thorough dust removal and wipe-down prior to coating

2) Coating Specification (Primer / Undercoat / Gloss)

  • Spot priming to bare timber and repaired areas
  • Primer coat applied where required to stabilise and unify the substrate
  • Undercoat applied for opacity and film build
  • Gloss finish applied to achieve a hardwearing, wipeable surface
  • Denibbing between coats where needed to refine smoothness and final appearance

Programme & Site Management

Works were planned around access requirements to keep entrances and circulation routes functional. Daily housekeeping, safe storage of materials and clean working practices were maintained throughout.

Quality Control

  • Substrate checks prior to coating: dry, sound, clean and suitably keyed
  • Inter-coat inspections: coverage, defects, uniformity and film build
  • Final inspection: colour consistency, sheen uniformity, crisp detailing and snag resolution

Result

The timber doors and screens were restored to a clean, professional standard with defects repaired and a full primer/undercoat/gloss system applied for enhanced durability. The completed finish provided a consistent sheen, improved protection and a significantly refreshed appearance suitable for a prominent Bristol venue.
